While making sure you stay active as you age, you also need to be prepared for such hot weather during the dog days of summer. People aged 65 years or older are more prone to heat-related health problems, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

But not to worry! We’re here to help you prepare for your time outdoors. Knowing how to avoid heat-related illnesses can help you anticipate any issues that may arise and be prepared if they do.

Here are a few tips for you to get ready for your time in the sun:

 1.     Hydrate
Although there is no exact number of ounces of water you have to drink each day, there are recommendations. Women are supposed to drink approximately 91 ounces of water each day and men should drink approximately 125 ounces total of water, according to the CDC.

2.     Use sunscreen
Apply sunscreen before heading outside. This will help you avoid sunburn which can add to the intensity of dehydration. You can also protect your skin by wearing a hat and sunglasses.

3.     Wear loose clothing
Dress in few layers that are also loose. Wearing loose clothing will help you stay cool in the hot summer months. Instead of layering up, choose lightweight and light-colored clothes, as this will help keep your body temperature down.

4.     Plan your activities
Plan your walk, yoga session or other outdoor activity during the morning or evening hours so you can avoid the intensity of the mid-day heat and sunshine. Another option would be to find a shady spot to do your preferred outdoor activity in. That way you can enjoy the outdoors without getting overheated.

Whether you are a senior or your loved one is, it’s important to stay educated on how heat affects our bodies but also how to enjoy the sun during the summer months. Remember these tips next time you’re planning your next activity outside during the dog days of summer and don’t forget, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine!
